Perplexity AI has released its Comet browser for Android devices, delivering what it calls "the world's first truly AI-native browser" to smartphones. This launch directly challenges established players by offering a fundamentally different browsing philosophy centered on an integrated, proactive AI assistant. Available for free download, Comet aims to redefine how users interact with information on their phones, moving from passive searching to active assistance.
Comet distinguishes itself through deep AI integration that is designed for actionable help. Unlike browsers with bolted-on AI features, Comet is built around the Comet Assistant, which functions as a persistent companion. This assistant can handle a wide array of tasks, from conducting research and summarizing complex topics to assisting with online shopping and managing daily workflows, all while showing its reasoning process for transparency. This positions Comet as a direct competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas, which focuses on automation, and Google's Chrome with Gemini, which emphasizes convenience.
A standout capability of the mobile version is its sophisticated handling of multi-tab contexts. The assistant can read and synthesize information from all of a user's open browser tabs simultaneously.
